Mother Earth
by Pat Grayson
I’m dying, slowly dying – yet nobody listens, nobody cares.
The tragedy is not only about me. It’s about all the animals that live on me, the fish in the sea, the birds, bunnies and penguins, the poor lizards and lovely beetles. All will perish with me – all species will be gone for ever.
And what about me? I have a soul and I have feelings. I don’t want to die. Yet my veins are full of poisons and my air, which was once so clean and pristine, is now murky and heavy. Not to mention the toxins that have killed the goodness of my soil. The aura that surrounds me is lifeless, all colour gone.
The tress and plants are dwarfing and suffocating, dying of the same cancer as I am.
We had a deal, you and I - I would let you live here, but only if you respected me. Part of our deal was that you would bathe in the enchantment of what I had to offer, glory in my beauty and abundance. I am God’s art.
But you have destroyed me. Like a young and innocent girl, you have whored me, brutalised me and left me to lie in my own vomit, too weak and sick to help myself. You changed the environment so what was once controlled is now out of control. Yes, it is you, man, who has caused the wind to destroy, rain to flood and sun to dry, desecrate and burn.
I cry tears of anguish for the lost future – do you not realise what you have done? How can you be so shallow in your outlook? Your law of Thou shall not kill is ignored when it comes to me, your mother, as every day the stake is driven deeper and the gases become more intoxicating. My death is slow and full of pain. I am not meant to die. Not yet, anyway. I trusted you. I did not know that you were without a soul, callous and uncompromising.
In generations to come, when I am a lifeless, barren ball of darkness, sombrely floating through the universe, the annals of history will show that man was the selfish race.
“Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power.
We have guided missiles and misguided men.”
Martin Luther King Jr., Strength to Love, 1963.
