Annular Solar Eclipse 15 January 2010

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring Earth’s view of the Sun. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun, causing the sun to look like an annulus (ring), blocking most of the Sun’s light.

At its peak, over the Indian Ocean, it will last 11 minutes 8 seconds. This duration won’t be exceeded for 1000 years. It will last 10 minutes 45 seconds in Male.

The solar eclipse 2010 will be the longest eclipse of the millennium, it will be visible as a partial eclipse in much of Africa, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia. It will be seen as annular within a narrow stretch of 300 km (190 mi) width across Central Africa, Maldives, South Kerala, South Tamil Nadu, North Sri Lanka, Burma and China.
