The number of people attending the Social Entrepreneurs Certificate Programme (SECP) has increased significantly as the role of social entrepreneurs has become more visible.
Social entrepreneurs continue to work at the coal face of society and in the increasingly volatile landscape in South Africa it is important to keep abreast of developments, particularly as indications are that the global financial landscape is bleak.
Bakwena’s foresight in setting up a multi-purpose centre in Chaneng, and staying committed to the initiative through thick and thin, is starting to pay off and hopefully, the return on investment is becoming visible.
There is a new emerging trend called IMPACT ENTREPRENEURSHIP. Significant strides have been made since 2007 when the model was conceptualised and the Chaneng Business Centre can proudly be regarded as a model where the impact is concrete, measurable and time based.
The Royal Bafokeng Nation have a Vision 2020 which deals with the diversification of the economy. A lot will depend on how local communities empower themselves and take ownership of local economic development within their areas.
A recent study by the Royal Bafokeng Nation shows that 1 person working on the mines supports 26 others. The recent volatility around the mines, including Chaneng, are a matter of concern, and innovative ways in which to gain the communities trust and engage with them in a proactive way need to be sought.
GIBS is running an Asset Based Community Development Training Programme (The Fundamentals) in November, between 5 – 9 November 2012. This is a certified programme. The following week they are running a “Train the Trainer” programme.
