My friend Sheila lives in Hout Bay and she told me some disturbing news about Sol Kerzner wanting to buy the mountain she lives near.
She says:
Hi Haroun…I don’t know much about reaching so many people on Facebook. Please read my latest and spread it far…our favourite mountain in Hout Bay is up for auction, with a history of fisherman & families staying there, their High School is where I’ve been teaching Nia lately to awesome students who would rather attend school during school holidays because they find their school so inspiring. It’s a society of poverty but it’s home to them & there are so many kids aspiring to better things, but this is their home & has been to generations! Sol Kerzner was there today to bid to buy the whole mountain, don’t know what his intentions are, they might even be good, but how can someone buy a beautiful mountain & generations of a society, families, children, schools, clinics, we have to know! Thank-you special…see what you can do?

Thanx so much for setting this up Haroun! I don’t know what’s going on … last week there was an auction to sell Sentinel Mountain, residents of Harbour Heights were there in full force & they stopped the auction (to thereafter do it secretly). Sol Kerzner was there to bid, maybe he has good intentions, but it’s home to generations of the fishing community, they have schools, clinics, dancing, music activities & NGO volunteers very hard at work helping some very poor people feel motivated. And it’s working! This is their home, anyone know what’s going on?

I’ve been following this auction by the Julius Buchinsky Group closely and, considering that the mountain happens to be privately owned, I think it is good for Hout Bay and South Africa that there are development prospects for the Sentinel. People living around the mountain have no jobs and it is evidently clear from TV images that they are on drugs too. Development can only benefit them and their children. Well done to Julius Buchinsky for putting the mountain up for sale!!

There’s always many sides to a story, my own personal view is that development isn’t a cure for our social ills, in fact it either masks them or exacerbate them, but I see you response to the environmental and hippie types likes me as a challenge to do something economically, socially and most importantly spiritually uplifting for the people in the area.
Who wants to take up the challenge?

My personal belief is that attacking a personality, especially if we don’t agree with the views expressed takes the attention off the real issue and tends to mire the process in confusion

What exactly does the hangberg community bring to the Sentinel and Harbour Heights? Crime. Drugs. Illegal smuggling. Organised crime. Since I have moved in I have had 7 break ins and over R100 000 of damages. The Hout Bay police has done nothing. As far as I am concerned they mean nothing, they have no heritage as all they can do is rape and pillage and cause trouble for the rest of the people that wants to enjoy the beauty of HOut Bay. Dont forget that the squatter camp that is developing against the mountain behind the so called “community” has no claim, as they are mostly illegal immigrants. Developing this area would only be for the good and will prevent the destruction that is taking place at the moment. The place is filthy and polluted, full of pollsmoor criminals and gangsters. Its a hideout, nothing more.
